The Rhythm City actor was declared dead the morning after the harrowing ordeal.

Rhythm City actor Dumi Masilela, who recently wed actress Simphiwe Ngema has died after an attempted hijacking in Tembisa, Gauteng, last night.

Speaking to YOU, police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela, said the deceased and his friend were sitting in the car on the side of the road when they were approached by a Jeep around 8 pm.

“And when they saw that they could be victims of a hijacking they drove off,” he said.

That’s when the occupants in the other vehicle started shooting and Dumi, who was driving a Volkswagen Golf car, sustained injuries.

“The friend took over the wheel and he managed to drive him to the hospital.”

According to police, Dumi was declared dead this morning.

The perpetrators are still at large, Makhubela said.

Condolences are already pouring in from other celebrities.

The minister of arts and culture Nathi Mthethwa also pain his respect on Twitter.

“We send our sincere condolences to Dumi Masilela's wife Simphiwe Ngema, his family, friends and colleagues. You are in our thoughts and prayers,” Mthethwa wrote.

In May, Dumi paid a tribute to his dad who passed away last year.

“Hard to believe it's been a year daddy. Thank you for everything you taught me, everything you saw in me. Thank you for loving mommy so dearly. We love and miss you Bra Sense of Knowledge,” he wrote.

The former Muvhungo actress Simphiwe and her husband were so in love and often flaunted it on social media.

“The world has not seen nor heard of what God has in store for you. Watching you grow into the role of being a husband and leader of our family has been a blessing. I am proud to be called your wife,” Simphiwe said on Instagram. The couple tied a knot in a lavish traditional wedding in May after dating for several years.

Simphiwe told her followers that she fell in love with his spirit. “In him, I saw a reflection of myself and God. There's no deeper love,” she said.
