WARREN Masemola likes to be under the radar, but his characters are sure to grab your attention. Even to this day, when his fans meet him, they want him to imitate the gay flamboyant character, Thoko, that he plays in Ses’ Top La.

HIS SKIN CONDITION

Despite all that adoration, the actor has not been blinded by the hot white flame of the spotlight. Though he is reluctant to label his experience growing up as painful, he shares that being bald was an issue for him. “When I was six years old, I was diagnosed with alopecia which is a condition that causes hair loss. I have been bald ever since,” he says. “Not having hair was an issue when I was younger but as I got older, I got over it. It’s one of those things that made me accept myself as I am.” He points out that because people didn’t know what alopecia was, “I don’t think there was stigma.” The actor, who was born in GaRankuwa, north of Pretoria, says regardless of his condition, his childhood was fun as he grew up in the nearby Soshanguve township. “I was a naughty child,” he chuckles. “I would always lose my school jersey or blazer,” he confesses, “And that’s how I learnt to take care of my belongings because my mom would punish me by letting me go to school without it in the cold.”

TRAGEDY STRIKES

It is these kinds of memories that make him appreciate his mother so much. He says he was lucky enough to have grown up in a home with both parents. But tragedy struck when he was in Grade 7. His father passed away. This left him devastated but he found comfort in knowing that he still had his mother.

ACTING HIS CALLING

His acting talent is undisputed even though the acting bug bit him without his knowledge. “I can safely say acting has always been coming as a career but I just never saw it. I only realised my true destiny after matric,” he says. Warren is an outstanding actor who has featured in many productions such as Intersexions, Scandal and Isidingo. Last year he scooped a Safta for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Comedy for his role as Thokozani Chanel in Ses’ Top La. In yet another of his outstanding performances, Warren is the disgruntled Cosatu character on e.tv’s Heist, something unlike Thoko and proof of how versatile the actor is.
