WATCH: We went to Comic Con Africa 2018 and here's everything we saw

Johannesburg – It was a fantasy-filled weekend in Johannesburg when Comic Con came to the African continent for the very first time.

The popular comic book, gaming and fantasy convention was held at the Kyalami Grand Prix and International Convention Centre from 14 to 16 September, with thousands of fans stepping through the doors over the three-day period.

Speaking to Channel24, Carol Weaving, Managing Director at Reed Exhibitions, says the festival exceeded expectations.

"We always knew Comic Con in South Africa was going to be a great start and I think the first show on the African continent, so we’re really, really excited. It is the last continent that we’re running Comic Con in, and I think we’ve been long overdue to be absolutely honest."

If cosplay is your thing, then Comic Con is definitely for you. The convention saw countless fans dressed up as their favourite fictional characters ranging from Thor all the way to Darth Vader.

Of course, a major attraction was the number of international stars who graced the main stage for panel discussions. The crowd went wild when The Big Bang Theory’s Kevin Sussman made an appearance, and there was no shortage of cheers when Vikings actor Trevor Fimmel interacted with the audience as well. Making an appearance on all three days were American Gods stars Yetide Badaki, Demore Barnes and Ricky Whittle.

According to Carol, Comic Con Africa will definitely be an annual event: "We’re going to be making it bigger and better going into the future. You may see other cities, you may see other countries in years to come."
