Johannesburg- Anyone who's been watching hip hop in Mzansi recently will tell you that there is a long line of female rappers looking to make 2015 their breakthrough year. And one of those near the front of the line is Nonku.
Nonku Phiri (or just plain "Nonku" as she's affectionately known) is well known for her silky vocals on tracks with Crazy White Boy and P.H .FAT. But she's finally ready to fly solo with a hot new single and a solo album to be released by the end of the year.
But how much of her new material will be rap and how much of it will be singing?
"I don't see myself as strictly a rapper or a vocalist. It's all about the music for me," she told us.
"The rap thing was unintentional. It was something that grew organically. I taught Smooth Mike (of P.H. FAT) how to sing and he taught me how to rap. It's just been about getting the message across," she adds.
And even though she admits most of her new material will be sung and not rapped, she says she still believes 2015 is the year in which female rappers will dominate the local hip hop scene.
