The Kiffness: "We're only together because of bad jokes"

2014 has been a good year for electro pop duo, The Kiffness. Not only have they grabbed the attention of South African music lovers with their contagious hits like Pushing on and Where are you going, but also consistently top local charts with their singles.

The band have exploded in such a big way that they have been shortlisted to open the Vodacom In the City Music Festival next month alongside international electro and dance superstars MGMT, Crystal Fighters and The Rudimentals. Impressive!

The Juice spoke to Dave Scott from the band about possibly opening the event, loving Danny K and how the band met over the lamest joke in all existence...

First of all, congrats on making the shortlist to open Vodacom in the City. That's huge!

We're really excited to possibly open for bands that we really love, but we're not getting too excited because we're not the biggest fans of voting competitions. Still, it would be really cool if we won!

On a scale of Vanilla Ice winning a Grammy (no chance) to Beyonce winning every imaginable award on earth (good chance), how do you rate your chances of winning?

We would be somewhere in the middle. I’m not sure where that would be, but yeah.

So if you do win, what could fans expect from your show?

We have a really good cover of MGMT’s Kids that we would open with.  We would probably also get new onesies, maybe ones that have LED lights. Oh, and we would also have to have back up dancers. My mom has offered to be one of the backup dancers!

That would be hilarious! If you could have any celebrity join you for a song on stage, who would it be?

Probably Danny K. He’s a real celebrity in our eyes. His name is Danny K after all, we would like to think the K stands for Kiffness.

Talking of Kiff, what is the kiffest thing that has ever happened to you?

Probably meeting my bandmate. Our friendship started in high school when I told him a joke. The joke goes 'What do you get when you cross a blueberry and a monkey? A hairy blueberry!' He didn’t even laugh he just shook his head and that pretty much started our relationship.

The Kiffness are competing with PH Fat, The Plastics and Bye Beneco for the chance to open Vodacom in the City. Fans can vote for the band on the events website here or  SMS the band’s name to 48477. Voting closes midnight on Friday and the winner will be announced next week Wednesday.
