Trevor Gumbi on his absent father on The Close Up

How do you get out of tough situations?

Well, if you're Trevor Gumbi, you tell a joke. The actor and comedian, who will be on tonight's episode of The Close Up, reveals that joking helps him to deal with hard issues. He says: "My therapists discovered I tend to joke when I feel cornered or when an issue is too hard to deal with. I make a joke to get out of it, so the rule for me was I cannot tell any jokes for 6 weeks, not even attempt to. If it comes as a joke that’s trouble for me I get kicked out."

Trevor, who once shocked fans when he went on Twitter to diss his wife, has also sought treatment for his drug and alcohol problem. Tonight he also reveals that not having a father figure was tough. "I still do resent the fact that he wasn’t around for me as his only boy. And then I grew up and started being in serious relationships. I found out that sometimes things don’t work out and its not about the kids - sometimes relationships just don’t work out, and as a man, he had to move on."

The show airs on etv at 9:35pm.
