Johannesburg – His name is on everyone’s lips at the moment, but rapper Emtee always knew he was destined to be a star.
The Roll Up rapper was a household name even before he stole the show with four awards at the Metro FM Music Awards last month. And talking to The Juice recently, Emtee says he always had a feeling he was going to make it big.
"I started music at a young age. I always thought I would be a child star but I guess God reserved me for this time," he says. "But I always knew I would be a star one day."
"I have done a lot of different kinds of music: choir, traditional, hip-hop. So I think as a musician I am fit to do any kind of music. I’m an all-rounder. It’s just that hip-hop happens to be the genre I love the most," he adds.
Emtee says that his love for all music has crafted his sound and helps set him apart as a performer.
In fact, he is such an exciting talent that he was quickly picked up by local rap king, AKA, and Naija artist, Wizkid, for an all-star collab.
"Roll Up was basically just a freestyle. I had left the studio and when I came back I found my producer working on a beat and I told him ‘I’m recording on this beat right now.' And as I was freestyling on it, I told him 'Just press record, I’m ready' and that’s how it happened,” he said.
"Wizkid called my road manager and asked to meet up with me. I didn’t believe it until they came to fetch me and took me to his hotel room. We hung out and spoke about how we love each others work and I told him I was planning a remix and he told he he wanted to be on it."
"The same with AKA. He contacted my manager and we met up. A day or two after meeting up he sent me his verse and we worked on it before Wizkid left the country," he recounts.
And now with a couple more honours in his cabinet, we’re sure the whole of Mzansi is queuing up to work with Emtee.
