Cape Town – 15 years ago, on 11 April 2001, football fans came in their thousands to the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, for the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
There was apparently a 60 000 person strong capacity crowd in the stadium, but some reports suggest that a further 30 000 fans were still pushing to get into the stadium.
Then, an Orlando Pirates equalizer made -the fans trying to get in- push even harder to get in.
They eventually made it in and then the fans all scrambled to see the action; there were so many of them that they spilled over into press boxes. It then became a stampede and 43 people were tragically crushed to death.
