Reports: Struggling gospel star denies abandoning his dad

Johannesburg - According to reports in the Daily Sun this week, gospel star Andile Mbili has fallen on hard times and can hardly afford to help his dad.

Andile was once a shining star in gospel group Abanqobi, but when he decided to leave the group and go solo in late 2014, things started going pear-shaped.

Talking to the paper this week, Andile's dad says that he thought when his son joined the group he had escaped poverty, but he has been left disappointed as his son struggles to make ends meet.

“When I heard him on radio singing with Abanqobi I thought it was the end of poverty for me,” says Andile's father, Jewel.

"I raised Andile alone with the little money I earned from the factories in Durban. His mother died when he was young and I had to take care of him. But now he has deserted me – his own father,” he adds.

But Andile denies this, saying his father must understand that he is struggling.

“My dad knows that I’m struggling. He must understand and support me. I don’t get enough gigs and my album is going very slowly in terms of sales," Andile told the paper.

"My father must also understand that I can’t visit him now because I’m busy. My biggest wish is to build him a house one day,” he adds.
