Cape Town - For many it’s known as the Cape of Storms, but for photographer Nardus Engelbrecht it has become the Cape of Dance.
In February this year Engelbrecht launched his first solo photography project inspired by the Ballerina Project, but with a difference.
“I focus on all dance genres, not only ballet.”
Though most of the Cape of Dance images to date have been shot in and around Cape Town using scenic backdrops or cityscapes as locations, Engelbrecht would like to connect with dancers in different parts of the Cape and showcase their talent as well as the beauty of their respective regions.
The project currently includes images of dancers from hip-hop, burlesque, fire dancing, contemporary and classical ballet genres.
"I love photographing dance and I love the Cape. In doing this project, I hope to contribute in creating more awareness for dance as an art form. It also hopefully helps to expand the portfolios of the dancers I photograph."
He plans on further growing the project and would ultimately like to showcase his body of work at an exhibition in the near future.
Nardus Engelbrecht is a regular contributor for Channel24. On Monday, Engelbrecht bagged a gold award in the still photography category of the National Arts Festival/BASA Arts Journalism Awards for his work published on Channel24.
He’s been a professional photographer since 2003 and has a special interest in dance, theatre and music photography.
