Cape Town - The word feminism has been around for a long time, but has more recently been brought into the spotlight by celebrities showing their support for the movement striving for gender equality.
So we thought we'd share our fav female celebrities who's all about #GirlPower:
1. Nicki Minaj
Known for her raunchy lyrics and outspoken attitude, the rapper is very vocal with her activism and continually transforms society’s views on sexuality and women in power.
2. Willow Smith
The 14-year-old is a public advocate for every teenager’s right to self-expression, and a supporter of #FreeTheNipple, a campaign against sexual objectification and the eradication of the stigma surrounding the female nipple.
3. Taylor Swift
The pop star recently addressed the double standards in media by telling Maxim magazine after being crowned number one on their annual Hot 100 list, "A man writing about his feelings from a vulnerable place is brave; a woman writing about her feelings from a vulnerable place is over-sharing or whining."
4. Beyoncé
Since outing herself as a feminist at the MTV VMAs (who can forget that moment), Beyoncé has continued to promote 'Black Feminism' and sexy, powerful women.
5. Lena Dunham
The actress most noted for her work in Girls, is also the creator and writer of the series that consists of a female-led cast.
6. Maisie Williams
The teen, famous for playing Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, has voiced her opinions on "first-world feminism" by telling The Guardian, "I know things aren’t perfect for women in the UK and in America, but there are women in the rest of the world who have it far worse."
