Nik Rabinowitz: I believe in mermaids

Cape Town - The annual Wavescape Festival’s Artboard Project combines surfing with art in a very unique way.

Ten artists turn surfboards into art for an exhibition that ends with a charity auction. The project raises awareness and funds for ocean charities such as the NSRI and Waves for Change.

The artists taking part in this year’s project are Brett Murray, Lionel Smit, Jenna Barbe, Peter van Straten, Steve Pike, Sujay Sanan, Conrad Botes, Jake Aikman, Alexis Aronson and Chris Burkard.

Artboard Project

This year, comedian Nik Rabinowitz auctions the boards at Tiger’s Milk in Muizenberg for some fund-raising, fun and frivolity.

We asked Nik some very serious questions about the event taking place on Tuesday, 29 November at Tiger’s Milk in Muizenberg.

Have you ever tried out surfing?

Yes, I have tried surfing for the past seven years. In fact, I am still trying.

If you had to create an art piece on a surfboard what would it be?

Donald Trump’s hairpiece, with the hashtag #MakeMuizenbergGreatAgain.

Why do you think people should come and check out the art boards?

There will be amazing works of board art, you’ll feel super cool hanging out at Tiger’s Milk, and all the proceeds go to great causes (NSRI, Shark Spotters, Waves For Change & Adaptive Surfing South Africa).

Also, if you (I) have three small kids it’ll be an opportunity for you (me) to get out of the house.

What will you be wearing to the art board event?

My Brett Murray inspired Hugo Boss Spear of the Nation trouser pant. I have no idea. Probably something blue, I’m told it brings out my eyes.

Do you believe in mermaids?

For sure.

Join Nik at Tiger’s Milk, Muizenberg at 19:00 on 29 November. Entrance is free.
