Journalist, broadcaster and political analyst Karima Brown died from Covid-19-related complications on Thursday morning.
Brown, a seasoned journalist, had in recent years become known for anchoring eNCA’s weekly show The Fix and being a regular political analyst on the channel.
eNCA managing editor John Bailey said she had been struggling with “these Covid-19-related complications for a few weeks now”.
Through a media statement, eNCA confirmed Brown’s passing saying: “It is with sadness that eNCA confirms that the anchor of The Fix, Karima Brown has passed away.”
The television broadcast station described her as having been “a regular face and contributor on eNCA for nearly five years, having been the host of The Fix since May 2018 and a political commentator on the channel since 2017”.
eNCA managing director Norman Munzhelele expressed his condolences to her family, saying: “For a long time, Karima has been a robust voice in South Africa’s media landscape. Her years of activism preceded this. She had a big personality and didn’t shy away from voicing her opinions. Karima believed in hope. She was also a loving mother, a loyal friend and a committed colleague. Her death leaves a massive void for many.” He said their thoughts where with her son, family and friends at this sad time.
Brown held a number of senior media positions, including political editor at Business Day and group executive editor at Independent Media. She also hosted several television and radio shows, including on CNBC Africa and Radio 702.
Cosatu was among the first to send its heartfelt condolences to Brown’s family, adding: “May her soul rest in peace.”
