Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in regular contact

Los Angeles - Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones call each other multiple times a day.

The couple, who recently admitted their relationship is going through a rocky patch, are not ready to give up on their marriage even though they are currently leading separate lives and are celebrated their birthdays apart on Wednesday.

A source told People magazine: "They're not giving up."

The Welsh actress, 44, did not attend the Emmy Awards on Sunday to support her husband, who won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or Movie for his role in Behind the Candelabra and thanked her in his speech.

But the insider insisted that the brunette beauty and the 69-year-old actor, who have a son, Dylan, 13, and daughter Carys, 10, together, are in regular contact and speak multiple times every day.

The couple have reportedly been separated for four months and Catherine is currently looking after their children at their home in Bedford, New York, while Michael is shooting his new thriller The Reach in Mexico.

Michael admitted on the red carpet on Sunday that he hopes he can save his marriage.

He said: "Catherine is great. She is doing wonderful, talked to her today and just got a lovely note from her. I'm very hopeful that we're going to work things out.

"As I said we're just taking a break, a couple of issues, sometimes you got to do that."
