Cape Town - Forget ugly stepsisters.

Royal-to-be Meghan Markle’s fairytale features some interesting characters too – like her half-sister, Samantha Grant.

Recent reports suggest Samantha (52) is furious about the fact that her world-famous sister is marrying a prince, but she isn’t able to help her bankrupt father.

According to The Mirror, Samantha had something to say about the pricey dress that Meghan (36) wore in her engagement pictures with Prince Harry (33).

The couture evening gown by British designer Ralph & Russo is said to have cost $75 000 (over R900 000).

“If you can spend $75 000 on a dress, you can spend $75 000 on your dad,” Samantha told the site.

MailOnline reports Meghan and Samantha’s father, Thomas (73), a former television lighting director, declared himself bankrupt in California last year, with credit card debts of £24 181 (R405 000) and savings of just £160 (R2 700).

Of course, this is not the first time Samantha has put her nose in the royal business.

Last year news broke about Samantha’s upcoming memoir, The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister. Now, while the title of the book might ring some alarm bells, Samantha told Good Morning Britain that the book is not a “slamming tell-all”.

Earlier this week, Samantha made yet another appearance on British TV show, The Wright Stuff, where she denied that writing the book was a form of cashing in on some of her new found connection to the royals.

“You know, and I have to say that I think the term ‘cash in’ is a low blow, I think any of us who have experiences and feelings - positive, warm, insightful or otherwise – and we’re able to share them apparently,” she said on the show.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s we’re cashing in, because there’s certainly a large audience and market of people who are interested and curious. So, why not share information that is socially and historically valuable? If you like, it's kind of a service to do that.”

While it’s safe to say Samantha probably won’t be standing at Meghan’s side as a bridesmaid on the big day, she’s adamant their dad will be there “one way or another” unless a “plane crashes through his roof”.

Thomas himself has yet to weigh in on the issue, but he certainly seems to approve of his daughter’s future husband.

"I think it’s wonderful, I’m very delighted,” he told The Sun after the couple announced their engagement. “I think they’re (a) very good match, I’m very happy for them, Meghan and Harry.

“I love my daughter very much – Harry’s a gentleman.”
