What it's about:
An acclaimed neurologist uses unorthodox techniques to try and tap into a young boy's unconscious mind and reveal the truth about his near-fatal fall and his life of near-death accidents.
What we thought:
The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a beautifully dark mix of fantasy and reality that will have you guessing until the very end.
Based on the best-selling novel by Liz Jensen, the film effortlessly swings between adult fiction, thriller and murder-mystery.
The handsome Jamie Dornan, as Dr. Allan Pascal, firmly steers the film to its surprising ending whilst subtlety revealing each piece of the puzzle to the viewer.
Dornan’s calm and collected portrayal of Dr. Pascal gives the film its much-needed centre on which the manic storyline is balanced.
Sarah Gadon, as Natalie, and Aaron Paul, as Peter, both become the opposite sides of the scale in which the viewer is flung from one end to the other – never really sure of who to trust.
The young Aiden Longworth as Louis Drax gives a fragile performance that makes the reader instantly sympathise with him.
Is you haven’t read the book and managed to stay away from any spoilers or movie trailers, this film is filled with surprises and magical twist and turns.
The balance between light and dark as well as fantasy and reality gives the film a mysterious element that’s mesmerising to see unfold on the big screen.
The 9th Life of Louis Drax is undoubtedly worth the watch and the perfect escape from reality if you just want to get away from the real world for a bit.
