The Son of Bigfoot

What it's about:

Teenage outsider Adam sets out on an epic and daring quest to uncover the mystery behind his long-lost dad, only to find out that his dad is none other than the legendary “Bigfoot!” Dad has been hiding deep in the forest for years to protect himself and the rest of his family from HairCo., a giant corporation eager to run scientific experiments with special Bigfoot DNA. As father and son start making up for lost time, Adam soon discovers that he, too, is gifted with superpowers beyond his imagination.

What we thought:

I’m pretty sure we all have our own story of Bigfoot, but I’ve got to be honest never did I think it would go the way The Son of Bigfoot does.

That being said the movie has everything you’d expect a kiddie’s animation to have: Entertaining characters, a storyline simple enough to understand and a whole lot of imagination.

The animation itself was done brilliantly. Aside from the movie being 3D, the vibrant colours and character drawings stand out and will keep kids glued to the screen.

Directors Jeremy Degruson and Ben Stassen (House Of Magic and Sammy's Adventures) achieve their goal in transporting the viewer into the life of a mythical creature hiding in the woods to keep his family safe, and to be honest watching the movie had me wishing I was Bigfoot for a hot second. Having the ability to talk to animals and heal wounds, to name a few powers, seems like a pretty good deal.

Looking at the characters themselves 13-year-old Adam and his long lost dad, who also happens to be Bigfoot, have great chemistry when they eventually catch up. Aside from the fact that the dad is Bigfoot, the father/son bonding really stood out for me.

Another aspect of the story line I enjoyed is Bigfoot’s animal sidekicks. You can never go wrong with funny friends to lighten the mood even in the most ‘tense’ scenes.

Trapper and Weecha the married racoons, Wilbur the bear and Tina the squirrel are definitely characters the movie would have flopped had they not been there.

The downside of this fun, adventurous movie however was the subtle but awkward one liner in one of the scenes of the movie. While a child may not notice it, nor understand it, a culturally insensitive joke may be offensive to some, and doesn’t really belong in a film catered for children.

Still, The Son of Bigfoot was a funny, entertaining and adventurous take on an old mythical tale fit for kids to enjoy.
