A nonprofit company based in Kuruman which makes it their mission to introduce youth to art of making music, recently obtained new musical equipment to further their cause.
With the purpose of re-imagining mining to improve people’s live, Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen Mine has sponsored the Agisanang Arts Ensembles to obtain new musical equipment that will further support their cause of fostering interest in the arts in villages.
Led by Lukhanyo Sojola and Tsholofelo Nakanyane, the organisation has 30 active members who are being tutored in playing musical instruments ranging from marimba to drums.
Founding member Sojola emphasises the value that the initiative will add to the lives of the youth.
“Through this initiative, we manage to keep many of our youth off the streets and create a space where they can freely express themselves. We have witnessed how children involved in our programmes gain confidence and self-esteem as they get exposed to live performances.
“With Sishen Mine’s assistance, we procured more musical instruments to add on to the marimba and steel drums sets. We are very grateful for this contribution as it allowed more children to join.”
Mmoloki Gaserekwe, community liaison officer at Sishen Mine, said initiatives such as these are crucial for unlocking the latent talent within communities.
“We trust the instruments that Sishen Mine provided will enable children to find their artistic expression.”
