Cape Town Tropika Island of Treasure season eight, which was launched at Sun City in North West this week, promises sweat, panic, anguish, victory, loss and the charm of the vibrant Expresso presenter Katlego Maboe as host.
Guests were treated to an exclusive screening of episode three of the much awaited series. It features picturesque drone shots of the exotic Maldives.
While Tropika juice flowed throughout the event, guests were treated to a palatable lunch and a special dinner buffet.
The dinner saw celebrities and contestants dressed to the nines and Maboe performing the show’s theme song, which he recorded.
Distruction Boyz’s hit song Omunye saw the crowd getting down with the popular vosho dance moves.
The competition pits seven pairs of celebrity and non-celebrity contestants against each other in various challenges for a R1 million cash prize.
The celebrity contestants are Nay Maps, Karabo Mogane, Khanya Mkangisa, Melinda Bam, Sbahle Mpisane, Brendan Peyper and Tumi Voster.
Miantha Padayachee, group brand manager for Tropika at Clover, said the process for the selection of the perfect group of celebrities required extensive interviews with people from different backgrounds.
Interviews to find the regular contestants were done in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
“They are perfect for the brand and they performed exceptionally well on the island. The most important thing about Tropika Island of Treasure is the friendship and bonds that were formed,” she said.
Former Miss SA Bam said: “The challenges were new, fresh and exciting. There was no repetition from previous seasons.”
Selimathunzi presenter Mkangisa – who loves her weave and nails – said that if she had known the drill, she would have gone for a more natural look because all of her nails broke within a week.
Maps, best known for his role as Mxolisi on the SABC1 drama Uzalo, said the competition taught him that inner strength has a way of carrying you forward.
The first episode will air on February 5 at 7.30pm on SABC3.
