Shakira (47) is opening up about her split from ex-boyfriend Gerard Piqué (37).

In a recent interview with Marie Claire UK the Colombian pop star gave an insight into her life after she and the former soccer star went their separate ways. She says that despite the messy split, she still believes in love.

The Waka Waka singer told Marie Claire that having a husband was high up on her list of goal, inspired by the relationship her parents, William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado, have. They've been together for 50 years.

“Deep down, I always thought having a husband was the most important thing in my life,” she says.

“I was in search for that man like my dad, who I’d have kids with and then make plans to be with forever – like my parents, who are still so in love.

"I made many sacrifices for this. I was loyal. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. You move on.”

Shakira and Gerard announced their split in 2022 after being together for 12 years. The relationship fell apart after Gerard was allegedly caught cheating on the Hips Don’t Lie singer.

The pair have two children, Milan (11) and Sasha (9). They've since signed a custody agreement and are co-parenting.

“Our sole objective is to provide our children with the utmost security and protection and hope that they can continue with their lives in a safe and calm environment.

"We appreciate that their privacy will be respected," she told USA Today.

Shortly after the couple separated, Gerard went public with his relationship with his current girlfriend Clara Chai Marti on Instagram.

Shakira is currently dating NBA star Jimmy Butler (34), reports US Weekly.

“It’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it, and because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation.

"And so, it’s been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult", the told Elle.

Though the split took a toll on Shakira, she's grateful for the support she has received.

“My relationship [lasted] 12 years but my friends will be there a lifetime. When hardship came, that’s when I learned how truly important friendship was.”
