Joost brought me to tears

Joost van der Westhuizen
I am a 66 year old and am bold enough to admit that I was brought to tears watching the brave emotions expressed by Joost.

We all remember the most famous no. 9 in the world and are shocked to see what he looks like now. My years left are getting fewer and I accept that, but a person who should be in the prime of his life, having only experienced a small part of what is intended is heart breaking.

I admire the grit that he has to continue the fight for survival I would have thrown in the towel long ago but then……I was never a professional rugby player. It becomes so obvious where the never say die approach comes from.

He is a professional and his brain has been conditioned to never accept defeat even when you are 66 to nil down. The will to win is there and like the disciplines that we were taught as troops in the Defence Force, these disciplines are inbred and will never leave you. Joost will survive as long as his mind has control of his body.

I still practice my disciplines learnt on a daily basis and till today enjoy the results of my regimented endeavors and the successes that I have achieved in life.

Joost, you are on the right path. Keep your mind on the game plan and when your eye is taken momentarily off the ball, regain focus and soldier on.
