Reader review: 50 First Dates

Everyone knows you just don't forget your First. It's the most magical of all experiences. For Lucy (Drew Barrymore), everyday is Her 'First' because she lost her short term memory in a car accident and can not retain any memory thereafter for more than 24 hours.

What drives a commitment phobic womanizer to pursue a woman who will never remember him. What spark must ignite to kickstart a man heart which is devoid of feeling. For Henry Roth (Adam Sandler), Lucy is that women.

Even after been threatened with a meat cleaver by the chef in the Hukilau café and advised by Marlin and Doug (Lucy's father and brother) to keep away from her.  Henry starts setting up chance encounters with Lucy using any and every excuse in the book. The sheer lengths that he goes through to woo Lucy is amazing.

Each day he learns more about her and loves her more deeply. Its like watching a very slow and careful seduction.
Instead of shielding her from the accident like her family does by going to great pains to maintain the illusion that it is Sunday October 13th, Henry gives her a videotape each morning explaining the accident and their relationship so far.
One day Lucy finds out that Henry has declined  a lifetime goal of a sailing trip to study walruses at Britol Bay.  Thinking that she is holding him back she unselfishly gets Henry to destroy all evidence of their relationship so that she can forget him the next day.

Weeks later while Henry is making arrangements for the trip he has second thoughts and goes to visit Marlin who gives him a beach boy's cd.  Henry remembers that Lucy used to sing after meeting him and realises Lucy actually remembers him.

Henry goes to meet her at the Brain Institute, there it seems that the heart is stronger than the mind . Each day Lucy has been dreaming and painting of the same man, one that she does not know until Henry arrives to make her dreams a reality.

The movie has a tear jerking ending as Lucy awakes on Henry's boat and is told to watch a movie labelled 'Good Morning Lucy' and then told to come have breakfast. On deck she meets Henry, her father and for the first time her daughter.
