Reader review: Batman Begins

Liam Neeson batman begins
My favourite Batman movie has to be Batman Begins (and also the entire Christopher Nolan reboot franchise).

He has redefined the superhero movie by being true to the source (DC comics) and thus satisfying the imaginations of fans world-wide. His presentation of Gotham is more grounded, more realistic, more dark, truer to the Gotham City penned and penciled by Bob Kane; more than the fairy tale wonderland as depicted by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher.

Never before has the Batman character been portrayed; as a troubled individual, by the best adequate actor (for the role) as Christian Bale; an accomplished feat that neither Val Kilmer or George Clooney could accomplish, and from which only Michael Keaton came close. The transition between millionaire playboy and dark avenger was done so effortlessly, the origin of Batman story was done in such a manner that establishes it as a chapter on its own.

The camera angles, the build-up to a climactic scene through emphasis of music, the cinematography, a well-polished script, the not too-over-the-top villains (Ra’s al Ghul and Scarecrow)… all contribute to a beginner franchise that sets itself up for a killer sequel and the best villain portrayal ever (the late great Heath Ledger).
In a world of superhero movies where MARVEL dominates the box-offices, it is good to see the big boys of comics (Batman and Superman) stepping back into the limelight. Well done, Christopher Nolan.
