An open letter to the Idols-watching public…

You have been entrusted with the enormous responsibility of selecting South Africa’s next pop music sensation. And instead of making your decisions based on merit, you have chosen the pretty and popular kids despite the fact that some of them performed appallingly in Sunday night’s show.

See for yourself:
Our video highlights of this week's Idols

Let's examine Exhibit A: Sasha-Lee Davids. A pretty poppie who showed promise in the audition rounds, but screeched her way through "Too Little Too Late" by JoJo. Not only did she flatten the song like a ghd, but she also looked constipated throughout the performance as she clearly struggled to reach the notes. And what did you do? You voted her into the Top 7 of the night!

Exhibit B: Thabs Kgoroeadira. A budding diva with sass and soulfulness in her voice. Amy Winehouse is incredibly difficult to emulate in any respect (unless you're trailer trash), yet Thabs pulled it off singing "Rehab" with confidence and sincerity. Instead of voting for her, - a worthy contestant, - you wasted your R30 sms bundle on pretty faces like Pixie, who covered Amy Winehouse covering the Zutons’ "Valerie". You can keep covering the artists, honey, but you won’t be able to cover up a lack of talent for the next ten 10 or so weeks.

And now Thabs is gone, because of you. When the next Idol disappears into obscurity and their biggest gig is headlining the Ficksburg Cherry Festival, remember that it's all your fault.

However, I cannot fault you on your choice decision to remove Thuba from the stage; His effort was as mind-numbingly boring as Liezel is on a good day.

Thembi was "Hot Stuff" on Sunday night, outperforming even awkward, geeky Cameron. Yet she wasn't in your Top 7. Instead you chose Lize who’s probably better at doing lap-dances in a leotard and fishnets than she is at being a successful pop star.  Graeme, who’s been a firm favourite, shook, rattled and intoned another cover of a cover, "Beat It" from Fall Out Boy.  Beatboxer George Avakian sang better than this! But you voted for Graeme...

Sunday night shows always have the ability to surprise us, but based on your voting performance this week, Jason and Daniel had better watch their backs next Monday night. It's sad, because they’re both really good, just not that good looking, right?

I implore you to respect your position of high esteem and act responsibly. South Africa is overpopulated with unwanted poptarts. Exercise restraint and vote with your ears, not your eyes. Put a condom on your phone! Too many times we've seen the wrong contestant claim the title. Protect us and yourselves from more 3-for-R99-bin CDs!
