Skinder: Straight from the Idols finale

The judges’ performance during the show wasn’t the only surprise of the evening. A journalist questioned Dave about his immigration to Australia on Monday. After Dave’s ‘no comment’ answer, he was later forced to let the sheep out of the bag when he couldn’t answer questions about the recording contracts offered by Sony Entertainment Africa. So much for showing an interest in local talent, Dave. So at least, if there is an Idols VI, we’ll have a new judge. Pity there’s no word on the presenter status...

Speaking of Liezel, she looked like an absolute bombshell in that hot pink dress. Unfortunately her lines were a hot mess. According to her, Sasha-Lee will open for an American comedian by the name of Wayne Brody when he tours SA. Let’s hope he’s as good as Wayne Brady from “Whose Line Is It Anyway”. The two finalists were also congratulated from the crowd by Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty who was exquisitely serene and humble even after being called Shilpa Chetty.  You can’t make this stuff up.

Another surprise was seeing sweet Jody Williams go from child star to training porn star. The suggestive dance moves and almost absent wardrobe made the whole performance a little uncomfortable to watch; kind of like Slutty Waitress Baby.

The Top 10 all sounded like winners during the absolutely fabulous show. I found myself wishing there was no winner. Even though my heart was set on Jason, it’s been proven over and over that the runners-up do as well, if not better than the winner in the real world. All that separates them is the amount of prizes Sasha-Lee went home with. I don’t think a tough guy like Jason would be caught dead in a chick car like a Citroen C1 anyway!

The Top 10 aren’t letting their early departure from the competition deter them either. Since they aren’t allowed to release an album before the winner, Thembi is eagerly waiting in the wings for Sasha-Lee’s album (due around August according to Dave) and then she plans to release her own. Lendel isn’t waiting on a contract; he’s going old-school! He plans to build his own recording studio at home. Well, at least his dad’s band will give him his first project if songwriting is on the slow side.

Pixie’s singing in her band and doing corporate gigs. She is so beautiful it doesn’t matter what she does, I’m sure people will pay just to see her up close. Graeme is packing his bags for Jozi after a 4 day retreat horseback riding in the Natal Midlands, of course.  Living it up like rock stars already. Eish... They must get paid well! Rumour has it that if you’d like to book our new Idol for a 45 minute gig, prepare to cough up R27 000 plus expenses.

And then there’s Jason. Understandably, the man is heartbroken, as am I. Although he vehemently denies it: "Sasha-Lee is an Idol, and I’m not. And that’s cool. Because I’m Jason Hartman.” But when he was questioned about his single, he made it very clear that it was the producers’ choice of song for him. So does he think it’s their fault that Sasha-Lee won? Hmm... Sasha-Lee’s single was definitely the better track.

Jason needn’t worry, though. His single, “Break the Silence”, will be available for download on the Nokia Music Store and there’s no doubt he’s got hordes of fans that will support him.

Another season of Idols, another Western Cape winner. Maybe the signal is better down in the Cape...
