Cape Town - The American actor spoke candidly about his very public split from Amber Heard in a 72-hour interview with Rolling Stone.

The former heart-throb started off by asking his interviewer, “So are you here to hear the truth? It’s full of betrayal.” His statement were highlighted by the word “scum” tattooed on his fingers that formerly read “slim”, in reference to his ex-wife Amber, Rolling Stone reported.

Here are some of the most jaw-dropping disclosures he made in the interview:

1. His divorce coincided with the death of his mother, Betty Sue.

The 55-year-old spoke about how depressed and “low” he felt having to go through divorce proceedings after losing his mother during the same time.

“I was as low as I believe I could have got,” Depp says about the series of unfortunate events that affected him.

“The next step was, ‘You’re going to arrive somewhere with your eyes open and you’re going to leave there with your eyes closed.’ I couldn’t take the pain every day.”

2. Depp toured with his band, The Hollywood Vampires, to cope with the stress.

He also disclosed he started writing his memoirs on the tour on an old-style typewriter.

“I poured myself a vodka in the morning and started writing until the tears filled my eyes and I couldn’t see the page anymore,” he said.

“I kept trying to figure out what I’d done to deserve this. I’d tried being kind to everyone, helping everyone, being truthful to everyone . . . The truth is most important to me. And all this still happened.”

3. He admits to having his lines fed to him through an earpiece.

The American actor kept a sound engineer on his payroll in order to be prompted his lines through an earpiece, a method he said brought “truth” to his acting.

His former management company, The Management Group (TMG), also claims the 55-year-old has never learnt his lines and paid sound engineers for years to feed him his lines.

4. Johnny called Harvey Weinstein a “bully”.

During the Rolling Stone interview Johnny apparently flipped through a newspaper and, upon seeing a picture of producer Harvey Weinstein muttered the word “asshole”.

“He was a bully. Have you seen his wife? It’s not a wide range. It’s not like he went, ‘I must go to the Poconos to find some hairy-backed b***h,” Depp said.

5. He says he hated the “f**king heinous” sub-plots of The Pirates Of The Caribbean.

The Oscar nominee said the sub-plots were convoluted as “not a soul wants to see Captain Jack sad”.

6. He described his mom Betty Sue as a “b***h on wheels”.

"Betty Sue, I worshipped her," Depp says – but his smile quickly fades. "She could be a real b***h on wheels," he told Rolling Stone he said at her funeral in 2016.

"My mom was maybe the meanest human being I’ve ever met in my life."

7. He says he would have used drugs to help speed up the capture of Osama Bin Laden.

“You get a bunch of f***ing planes, big f***ing planes that spray sh*t and you drop LSD 25. You saturate the f***ing place. Every single thing will walk out of their cave smiling, happy.”

8. He’s practically broke.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star made around $650 million (R8,77 billion) on films that netted $3,6 billion (R48,6 billion), almost all of which is gone. He’s also suing TMG, run by his long-time business manager, Joel Mandel.

9. Tom Petty’s death impacted him greatly.

We’d call each other and ask, ‘Hey, you still smoking?'” Depp said. “Tom would go, ‘Yeah, I’m still smoking,’ and I’d feel better: ‘Well, if Tom is still smoking, I’m OK.'”

10. He wasn’t allowed to mention his ex-wife directly

The actor revealed he couldn’t talk about his wife directly as it would contravene the terms of their divorce settlement.
