Celebrities, from pop stars to movie actors, are notorious for coming up with strange names for their offspring. But few can top the latest belonging to Tesla billionaire Elon Musk and his girlfriend, singer Grimes.

1. X Æ A-12 Musk

Taking the top spot for weirdest baby name out there must be X Æ A-12 Musk – the name Claire Boucher a.k.a Grimes and SpaceX mastermind, Elon Musk, have given their newborn son.

As fans no doubt shook their heads and rolled their eyes, Grimes (32) tweeted a full breakdown of what the name means: "X, the unknown variable; Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence); A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). no weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent; plus (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat)"

Well, okay then.

2. Raddix

Yup, this is what actress Cameron Diaz and her rocker husband, Benji Madden named their baby girl who was born in January.

As for the meaning, the couple haven’t revealed it but Nameberry’s baby-name expert Pamela Redmond Satran told SheKnows: "Raddix could be a variation on the Slavic name Radek which means 'happy' or it could be an invented name combining 'Rad' (as in cool) with the trendy x ending."

3. Cricket and Birdie

Seriously, Busy Philipps? You named your one daughter after an insect and the other after a bird?

Explaining the unusual names she and her producer husband Marc Silverstein gave their two young daughters, the Cougar Town star says: "I grew up with a nickname – Busy is short for Elizabeth. So we just wanted to name our kids that thing we wanted to call them."

4. Bear Blaze

Well when your father’s name is Ned Rocknroll, what do you expect?

Bear is the only child of 41-year-old Ned and Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet, the LA Times reveals. Explaining the name, the British actress said that Blaze came from her and Ned's "meeting in a house blaze" – referring to the time when both were guests at Richard Branson’s house on Necker Island when a fire broke out.

5. Elsie Otter

The four-year-old daughter of American actress Zooey Deschanel and her ex-husband, producer Jacob Pechenik, was named after the New Girl actress' love for the water animal. "I love animals and we love otters because they’re so cute and playful and fun. And they’re really smart."

6. Aleph

Naming her first child was as easy as, erm, ABC, says Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman.

"Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, much like alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. But it has a lot of mystical, symbolic meanings of humility, strength," says the Jewish-raised actress, who welcomed her son with French choreographer husband, Benjamin Millepied in 2011.

7. Kulture Kiari

Wacky rapper couple Cardi B and Offset were never going to have a run-of-the-mill name for their 18-month-old daughter. As Cardi put it: "Anything else woulda been basic." Interestingly, Kulture is at least partially named after her dad – Offset’s real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus.
