Anderson Cooper: I'm gay and proud

2012-07-03 07:33
Los Angeles - CNN presenter and journalist Anderson Cooper confirmed he is gay on Monday, saying he "couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

The 45-year-old TV host made the announcement in an e-mail to a journalist for The Daily Beast online who had asked Cooper to comment on the issue of celebrities coming out.

"Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons," he wrote to journalist Andrew Sullivan.

"I think most people want some privacy for themselves and the people they are close to," he added in the e-mail, published on the British journalist's The Dish blog on the Daily Beast.

Privacy vs principle

But, said Cooper: "Recently... I've begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle.

"It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.

He continued: "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

Cooper is the main anchor of the daily news show Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN, but also had a syndicated daytime talk show, Anderson.

His comments came after a recent article in Entertainment Weekly highlighting an emerging trend for gay people in public life to come out in a more restrained way than in the past.

The CNN presenter said in his e-mail published on Monday: "I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues.

"In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I'm not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist."

What an amazing man. Even though his mother is Gloria Vanderbilt (the 7th wealthiest family in history), he became a journalist and spent years in war-torn areas reporting. A remarkable person.

      tooka.loosh - 2012-07-03 15:31

And now he's the hero for announcing his gayness to the world huh? What a man indeed.

      smili.fication - 2012-07-03 15:37

Smilification supports gay rights. IT'S YOUR CHOICE! Viva Freedom!

      Gieljam - 2012-07-03 17:55

All going for him pity he does'nt now a boob from a tube .

      Rodney - 2012-07-04 02:03

You obviously have the wrong idea about what a hero really is. Declaring you are gay is not an heroic act, it's just stating the truth. In the same way rugby players/ soccer players etc. are not heroic, just good players. Putting yourself in harms way to defend or help others is heroic.

      Carla - 2012-07-04 07:10

This is a heroic act. In a world with prejudice, people who are different fear for their lives, so when one stands up its a brave and heroic act to say "im different"

      hanlie.noeth - 2012-07-04 18:42

      James, homophobic much???

      carol.harvey.9406 - 2012-07-03 13:05

      boltonbarry - 2012-07-03 13:13

  • veldt66 - 2012-07-03 08:05

Im coming out too, I am Straight. I will begin organising a"nnual straight people parades to celebrate our sexuality

      walter.o.latham - 2012-07-03 08:09

Unfortunately, my computer will only allow one thumbs up..... it would have been hundreds!

      phoenix.px.5 - 2012-07-03 08:17

Yes that would definitely help stop straight people from discriminated against, thrown out of their homes and jailed and killed in many countries just for being heterosexual. Hang on... oh yes that does not happen to straight people. Silly me.

      charlie.elford.5 - 2012-07-03 08:17

Wow, that was original. You don't need a straight parade - for you it's called 'everyday life'

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-07-03 08:24

We don't need to parade normality.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-07-03 08:51

Hence you should be paraded, Vaal

      Darren - 2012-07-03 12:06

The other day i was in a bank and there was a straight couple standing in front of me in the queue. I felt a little embarrassed for them as people stared. I was happy they found love though. Love you Mr Cooper!!

      Darren - 2012-07-03 13:46

@boltonbary - My imaginary friends told me to give your comment a "thumbs up" cause you spelled our name wrong. ^^

      boltonbarry - 2012-07-03 14:34

LOL Sorry for the mistake Darren :-)

I just don't know why I got all the thumbs down. Is his eyes not nice or what? The first thing I notice about a person is their eyes ok.

Anderson Cooper Comes Out As Gay.A reporter publicly discusses his Sexuality and have a look what Anderson has to say !!

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-07-03 09:57

Well good for him. Because of our design and "plumbing" I'm sure men weren't supposed to be gay or women lesbian, buy hey, I won't discriminate against them. It's a free country and it's their choice.

      phoenix.px.5 - 2012-07-03 10:28

Sexuality is not a choice, obviously. The only people who would think being gay (or straight for that matter) is a choice are bisexuals who actually made the choice to date/marry a specific gender. Are you bisexual Stefan?

      Irene - 2012-07-03 17:30

Phoenixx ~ Keep telling them, maybe one day they'll understand.

  • clinton.kearney.3 - 2012-07-03 12:21

      thando.gqabaza - 2012-07-03 15:35

      ha ha brilliant

      Sharon - 2012-07-03 20:09

  • di.hingley - 2012-07-03 13:01

If I announced that I was "straight" would it make headlines? His lifestyle choice is his choice why should we be informed? It doesn't change who he has been, who he is and who he always will be! Long live human beings, because that is who we ALL are!

      phoenix.px.5 - 2012-07-03 14:12

It is not a choice.. but anyway... Unfortunately the world needs people like this to come out as gay in order to change the perception of the masses: who still think that gay men are effeminate, dress wearing lady-boys who abuse little boys; and still discriminate and kill gay people for being who they are.

      Irene - 2012-07-03 17:32

Tooka.loosh ~ Unfortunately you have no idea what you are talking about. There are so many issues that straight people perceive as being normal that gay people have to fight for. Because you're so bigotted this is something that you will just not understand.

      Phoenix - 2012-07-03 18:20

Unfortunately the masses DO care - hence the number of gay people killed yearly around the world for nothing more than simply being gay. I don't think I am more special than anyone else. I just think that all humans should be treated equally. Is that difficult for you to understand? It is convenient when you are in the group that is treated better than the other one, isn't it?

      tooka.loosh - 2012-07-03 20:14

You don't want EQUAL treatment. You want SPECIAL treatment! What do you know about the 'masses' if you stand so aloof from them like that and comment on them in your condescending tones? When you view every individual memeber of the 'masses' as a potential gay-basher?, then stand back and condemn the lot of us without even realizing that you're doing it. The irony is that it is this very quality many gay individuals seems to posses that is so despised by the very 'masses' you so deride. You DO think you're special. You DO view every staight person with contempt (see how it feels) and you DO deserve to be treated like outcasts until such a time that you can treat others as equally as you would like to be treated yourselves. Its not your lifestyle that some of us have issues with, its your frigging attitude man.

      Phoenix - 2012-07-03 22:47

      Tooka you have issues.

      tooka.loosh - 2012-07-03 23:11

Yeah righ Phoenixx - as does everyone who doesn't embrace your lifestyle, isn't that right? - it's pretty much my entire point dumass.

      bashin.monyela - 2012-07-04 18:08

      True that tooka

  • patsy.smith.125 - 2012-07-03 15:44

Good for you, Anderson Cooper! Your sex life is your own business and no-one else's. One day, people will realise that in nature there are, in fact, 3 sexes - Male, Female and Gay. It'll take a long time though, I'm afraid.

      phillip.crossley - 2012-07-04 07:07

If his life is his own business... why feel the need to announce to the world? Just seeking attention! We don't care who's bum he sticks his d#ck into.

  • Hugo - 2012-07-03 19:33
