Charlize Theron and Sean Penn split!

Cape Town – Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have called it quits, sources have confirmed.

The sad news comes as a surprise after the couple - who dated for a year and a half - had no problem sharing their feelings for one another over the last few months, E! News reported.

A source told Us Weekly that the South African beauty decided that their romance was over after attending the Cannes Film Festival in France with the I Am Sam star, who proposed during a romantic trip to Paris last November.

Another source confirmed the news to PEOPLE and claimed the former couple, who haven't been spotted together in a number of weeks, stayed under separate roofs.

The insider said Sean recently pulled his Malibu mansion off the market after putting it up for sale, Bang Showbiz reported.

The 52-year-old and the 39-year-old were last spotted looking smitten as ever at the Mad Max: Fury Road premiere in Los Angeles last month.

Earlier this year, Charlize opened up to the idea of marrying Sean Penn in an interview with Esquire magazine, she said: "I think our friendship stemmed from mutual respect—more on my end, because I really didn't have a body of work 20 years ago, but my love and passion for making films—that was our common ground.

"I love the possibility of anything, but I'm really enjoying myself and the everyday moment and how that coincides with my son and my life and my friends. I'm a very, very, very lucky girl. Very lucky. He's hot. He is hot."

Sean Penn also sparked speculation of an engagement when admitting to being open to getting married again.

The Milk actor, who was previously married to Madonna for 4 years followed by a 14-year union with Robin Wright, said: "Yes, I'd get married again. I'm in love with a woman and home is where the heart is, right?"

Although the couple were rumoured to hit rocky waters after filming The Last Face together in South Africa, they were quickly set to rest after Sean called Charlize "the love of his life".

Us Weekly was the first to break the news of their split.
