Los Angeles - Giuliana Rancic "wept" for an entire night and day when Joan Rivers died.

The 40-year-old TV star has recalled her devastating goodbye to her Fashion Police co-host and mentor when Rivers died at the age 81 last September following a botched throat surgery.

Remembering her grief in her new book Going Off Script, Giuliana said: "I wept myself to sleep. I spent the entire next day in bed, buried beneath the covers, crying until there were no tears left."

When Giuliana arrived at the hospital to see Joan, the comedienne's daughter Melissa told her to say her last goodbye before they unplugged the ventilator keeping her alive.

She stated: "On her deathbed, her nails were perfectly manicured and painted a deep vampy purple. Her hair and make-up were done, as well. Joan was just Joan sleeping. Her favourite show tunes played in the background. I came in the middle of A Chorus Line."

In her final moments with Joan, Giuliana took the opportunity to thank her for all the advice she had given her and for her "willingness to take a chance on a girl with a funny name".

Giuliana said: "When I sadly realised that (Joan wasn't going to wake up), I spent the next 15 minutes talking to her and thanking her for taking a chance on me, for all the invaluable advice, and for making me feel loved each week. Finally, I said one last goodbye through my tears, then walked out and hugged Melissa tightly." publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
