Hollywood stars take over Cape Town

Cape Town - The Hollywood cast of The Giver are tweeting, sipping wine and partying to reggae music between film shoots in Cape Town, City Press reported.

Meryl Streep sipped local white wine and Jeff Bridges was spotted getting his groove on at a reggae bash in the city this week.

Meanwhile, Katie Holmes whipped fans into a frenzy by posting her first tweet from Cape Town on Friday.

Holmes, who only joined the social network on Friday afternoon, uploaded a picture of herself with singer Taylor Swift and actor Bridges, her co-stars in The Giver, which is being filmed across the city.

Holmes’ second post on Twitter reads: “So happy to be on Twitter!!!!!! Sending first tweets from South Africa!!!!!”

British tabloid Daily Mail reported that Suri, Holmes’ seven-year-old daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise, accompanied her on a game drive in the Karoo last week.

Veteran actress Streep was wrapped in luxury while sipping crisp Viognier and gazing out over the yacht basin adjacent to the V&A Waterfront.

She is staying at the five-star Cape Grace Hotel – where 40-year-old Glenfiddich single malt whisky is charged at R3 500 a tot and the penthouse suite costs R17 000 a night.

Staff said the movie star, who famously portrayed Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, mostly kept to herself. She was treated to a private VIP tasting of Calais Klein Valley wines at the hotel last Friday, and was apparently particularly taken with a limited-edition Viognier.

Bridges, who garnered a cult following for playing The Dude in The Big Lebowski, shunned the city’s well-heeled circles in favour of a “moerse party” in Observatory, which is considered one of the city’s more bohemian suburbs.

He was seen grooving to local reggae band The Rudimentals at a club called Trenchtown on Saturday evening. The club’s owner, Anthony Hendricks, said about 600 people – including Bridges – rocked up at the jol, with a cover charge of R20 per person. “Ja, the bar staff recognised Jeff. It was hecticly busy. It was a moerse party (sic)!”

Shooting for The Giver, based on the 1993 dystopian teen novel by Lois Lowry, started earlier this month. City Press understands that “emotional scenes” starring Bridges and Swift were filmed this week. About 300 South African extras will feature in the movie by Phillip Noyce.
