'Marriage inequality like apartheid'

2012-05-28 15:22
Los Angeles - Charlize Theron says she has no plans to marry anytime soon, even if she meets someone new, because she finds the institution unequal.

The 36-year-old South African beauty told YOU magazine: "Marriage is not for me. Until it's equal for everybody, I don't want to be a part of it. I grew up during apartheid and this feels similar.

"Why can heterosexual couples have the legal status of marriage and same-sex couples cannot? That is like having a white water fountain and a black water fountain."

'I try to live in the present'

Charlize also said she wants to go into space.

The Snow White and the Huntsman actress - who adopted a baby boy named Jackson in March - thinks it would be a "scary" experience, but would love to be onboard Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic commercial space flights.

She said: "I'm totally open to going up in space. Isn't Richard Branson doing it? But I hear it's expensive! You can go up for $200 000. I'm open to all of that stuff.

"I'm sure it would be scary, but hopefully I'd just be going to see what it looks like, so I'd be coming back.

"I wouldn't miss anything here because I try to live in the present."

I see this two ways: 1. You have an excuse not be get married. 2. Your principals became Hollywood-ized (shall I say)

      James - 2012-05-28 17:36

Thackray "Nothing like breeding Son in Horses Dogs and Men" The sooner you realize that CT the better. BTW "Gay" is a tragedy,20yr shorter lifespan,13.9x suicide rate, 3x smoking,7x Alcoholism than Hetero's. In US "Gay Men" .5% pop 52% Hiv cases.@ $225,656 per patient. Sources CDC, VA.FBI. See Craigslist San Francisco, men looking for men.

      Phoenix - 2012-05-28 20:52

Oh dear and here we go again with James cutting and pasting his default anti-gay rant. James, since you think these stats are correct, why do you think this would be? Maybe because gay people are abused and killed all over the world and have to be constantly bombarded with messages by the likes of you?

      Thomas - 2012-05-28 21:05

Phillip you have hit the nail right on the head! If there is nothing wrong with her re-productive system, why didn't she have a baby out of love from her nine year relationship with Townsend? Instead she adopts a Hollywood politically correct baby like many of the other clebrity types!A mother of convenience.(Headlines)I do not begrudge her, her fame how hard she earned it but now it's a case of when in "Rome" "I try to live in the present" But bring in "Apartheid" and Gay Marraige in the same sentence and youve got those stupid gullible Americans where you wan't them!!You are a clever girl "KOODOOS" to you, but you don't fool us!!

      GrootWitHaai - 2012-05-28 22:35

What she's trying to say is that she is too selfish to allow a man into her life. All the rest of her jibberjabber is for the press.

      zaatheist - 2012-05-29 06:23

@James Just as apartheid discriminated against people based on something (the colour of their skin) which they couldn't change, gays are now being discriminated against based on something (their sexual orientation) they can't change, - Reverend Peter Storey, bishop of the Methodist church, South Africa Nothing optional—from homosexuality to adultery—is ever made punishable unless those who do the prohibiting (and exact the fierce punishments) have a repressed desire to participate. As Shakespeare put it in King Lear, the policeman who lashes the whore has a hot need to use her for the very offense for which he plies the lash.” -- Christopher Hitchens

You managed to pass comprehension at school... Cause you've clearly missed the boat on this one!

  • nayes - 2012-05-28 15:45

I think it's awesome when people stand up for what they believe in. Not everyone is that brave or that dedicated to the equality of others. I salute you Charlize.

  • Provence - 2012-05-28 15:51

its interesting, most stars in Hollywood have had a dysfunctional upbringing. As a result they don't know what is normal. Then they stand up for things they believe in which are totally screwed up or suites their choices. Sorry sweetie, you need to get out of your dysfunctional Tinseltown way of thinking and get back to basics.

  • thabo.lelaka - 2012-05-28 15:52

Do u wanna get married to another woman madam?

  • Phoenix - 2012-05-28 16:01

Oh people get a grip! Same-sex marriage has been legal in SA since 2006 and did your world implode??? No it didn't. Seriously this is such a non-issue.

  • Omo - 2012-05-28 16:03

Everyone know that charlize is a bi.She likes both sides of the coin.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-05-28 16:04

So who really cares how you feel? Not certain who you are trying to impress. Are you coming "out of the closet?"

  • Preshen - 2012-05-28 16:06

      John - 2012-05-28 16:16

      Press - 2012-05-28 16:49

      Tamaranui - 2012-05-28 18:55

  • Stefan de Lange - 2012-05-28 16:17

Ag popie jy moet jou kop lat lees. Jy is duidelik nie meer n suid afrikaner nie

      kingtyrone - 2012-05-28 16:27

Actually Stefan, Gay marriage has been legal her since 2006. She's trying to make them MORE South African...

  • jan.human - 2012-05-28 16:22

Jou koppie raas!!!!!Moet jou asseblief nie met SA vereenselwig nie... Jy maak ons naam sleg!

      kingtyrone - 2012-05-28 16:29

Jan, gay marriage is ALREADY legal here.

      Pulverturm - 2012-05-28 16:33

Gay Marriage is legal here... she's actually trying to bring the Americans into the 21st Century!

  • Heinrich - 2012-05-28 16:24

This is probably one of the most ridiculous and immature arguments I have ever read. The only comparison between apartheid and same sex marriages is is that they are both wrong… Get over yourself Charlize, the World doesn’t care if you get married or not!

  • Heinrich - 2012-05-28 16:27

      Phoenix - 2012-05-28 21:23

Being upset about gay marriage (or as I would like to call it - marriage) is like being upset with someone for eating a doughnut when you are on a diet.

  • Ansie Van Der Gryp - 2012-05-28 16:47

nee!! nou het ek als gehoor lmga ...

  • kenneth.cairns.50 - 2012-05-28 17:07

I really am tired of Charlize Theron.Charlize-for all you have achieved-well done, but please stop making kuk comments for attention in Hollywood especially bringing up Apartheid (eg:past) about SA.Here in SA, no one cares whether you marry or not,gay or not,or whether you feel marriage is like or similar to apartheid because you are American now, not SA. You left SA to further your career choice in US.Congrats, but leave SA,its past, its issues out of your attention seeking mouth. When you left SA, no one had seen you fighting for the rights of the oppressed, since your Oscar winning performance and meeting Mandela, now you behave like you've been there the whole time fighting for the oppressed during Apartheid.Sis.

  • Michael - 2012-05-28 17:18

Ag bokkie, chameleons on Smartie boxes are more confident about who they are than you are. Your transformation from 'gewone SA meisie' to wannabee American is so artificial you have accumulated more cosmetic plastic than Michael Jackson could ever dream of. By the way, this comment is not to be confused with a helping of sour grapes, your success in the film industry is well deserved however, I hope it was worth what you paid for it.

  • Riëtte - 2012-05-28 17:27

To each his own. I feel gay marriages is wrong, to compare it to apartheid, pathetic!

      Phoenix - 2012-05-28 17:53

Yup convenient when you are heterosexual. NOt?

  • Deidre Ruiters - 2012-05-28 17:30

oooooo eeeeee!!Who cares if u dont get married....!!!!!

  • Willem - 2012-05-28 17:31

Eish, you can take the blond out of Boksburg, but not the Boksburg out of the blond....

      gareth.jones.7771 - 2012-05-29 10:40

When did they rename Benoni Boksburg?

  • tinus.v.zyl - 2012-05-28 17:31

Apartheid, another person using that horrible word. It will not be "...like having a white water fountain and a black water fountain.". It would be more like a pink fountain with another pink fountain....abominations spurting from the freaky fountain. Look if you are gay you cant be changed. Society doesn't accept it and doubt gay people like to be refered to as fountains. That's a sick thought. That's not the point however. What does race got to do with gay marriage anyways? Charlize keep to acting and leave the politics for the intelligent people. And, with "I wouldn't miss anything here because I try to live in the present.", why do you even mention apartheid then. Because that's over and past. Think your comments are completely irrelevant to anything and doesn't really make any sense. You are one of those selfish expats who ran away from your heritage and now think they are superior. Ill praise you for being a very good actress and making a good name for yourself, but morally I think the American way of life has made you a little shallow and seemingly irrelevant to the facts. All over the world they had an apartheid system, South Africa just gave it a name. Now 20 odd years later we STILL get grieve for it.

      mbossenger - 2012-05-29 08:35

I'm no huge fan of Charlize, but actually the comparison is not that far fetched - apartheid discriminated against a group of people based on an arbitary criterium, namely race. Now there is discrimination against a group of people based on an arbitary criterium, namely sexual orientation. I am very much in favour of gay marriage.

  • Willem - 2012-05-28 17:36

Charlize, to coin a comparison.... next time you cross a bridge, think of how many bolts and nuts hold the bridge(society) up. If the bridge only had bolts in, would you cross it.....? Hmmmm. It took a Bolt and nut to put you on earth! (No pun intended...)

      Phoenix - 2012-05-28 17:53

      Then stop making gay people!

      Dakey - 2012-05-29 01:05

@Phoenix... I've yet to see a dog that doesn't try to jump a bitch in heat. That my friend is the definition of being 'gay'. No-one is created gay.

      mbossenger - 2012-05-29 08:43

I nominate Willem for the worst analogy ever...

      Phoenix - 2012-05-29 09:57

Dakeyras - really??? So when did YOU decide to be heterosexual??? Whenever someone says being gay is a choice, I assume this person is bisexual - because ONLY bisexual people will think that sexual orientation is a choice.

      samuel.mphela - 2012-05-30 03:01

Dakeyras...actually there's proof of homosexual animals out there, I suggest you get educated on that, then maybe your ideas of what gay ppl are will change, and maybe not. But being gay is predominantly not a choice, it just is the way other ppl are \wired\.

  • odette.vanzyl - 2012-05-28 18:40

I always thought Charlize was a very talented young girl. Sadly, she has become of this world and her principals indeed has become Hollywood-ized. It is very sad that so many are no more living according to what the Bible instruct but rather what man desire.

  • Desiree Rowe - 2012-05-28 18:44

Charlize should shut her mouth, if you haven't tried it you can comment on it. Ignorance is bliss in her case it makes her look like a big fool. Charlize where marriage is conserved your opinion is unwelcome and unwanted. It would be like you telling a woman how to give birth and how painful it is but, you have never been there or done it. You made your choice no keep your opinion to yourself.

  • Siyabonga Mbatha - 2012-05-28 19:27

she must be really lonely.... shame

  • Warren - 2012-05-28 20:40

Comparing the denial of marriage to the horrors of Apartheid, this is a complete insult to all the victims of Apartheid, whose land was taken away, were barred from certain jobs, not allowed to enter certain areas and imprisoned if they resisted. She needs some historical education because she is clearly ignorant, if she can compare something so severe to not being allowed to get legally married.

  • navarrocarly - 2012-05-28 20:56

Everytime she smiles looking like she's about to say 'thank you'. Check it! So why ppl hatin on the gay community anyways? they keep to themselves really, dont make any difference in anyone's life if one marries. Its not like the rest of us follow the bible to the 'T' now do we?

  • Dakey - 2012-05-28 21:22

Goodness, the more I hear this woman speak the more I dislike her. She is fake, painfully so.

  • isabel.pereira.77964 - 2012-05-28 21:56

Pulverturm - spiritual handicap my friend, not physical. when we die physically our bodies returns to dust, read the whole Bible, its the Best book to live by and the word of God has never changed and never will. Mathew 24, read the whole chapter Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

      Phoenix - 2012-05-29 09:58

Oh my. You are totally delusional my dear.

  • Pierre Pieterse - 2012-05-28 22:09

She is getting more of an embarrassment to South Africans every day with the crap coming out of her mouth!!

  • Stephen - 2012-05-29 07:37

Shame!!!!!!Just let her carry on as she does. Her adopting a black kid doesn't impress me.She thinks she's a crusader against injustice. She's nowt but a god-damn hypocrit. She's gonna end up as a wrinkled, bitter and twisted haggish old maid. Not even Zuma with his low standards will want her.
