Cape Town – False reports about the death of afro-soul singer Camagwini nearly led to the death of her grandmother, reported Sowetanlive.co.za
"My grandmother was minding her own business when she was greeted by community members who came to mourn my death.
"She was so distraught that she collapsed," Camagwini told Sowetanlive.
It was reported that 75-year-old Mamkwayi Buti had to be stabilised after hearing the 'news'.
According to the newspaper, the musician's cousin is to blame for the false rumours.
The cousin, Andiswa Buti, sent out a Facebook message about the Invumi singer's "demise".
The news of the singer's passing later turned out to be a practical joke.
'No upcoming album'
The musician denied that the message served as means to generate interest on her upcoming album.
"There is no upcoming album. I will release a new album towards the end of the year, or early next year. How can I make a publicity stunt with death - of all things?" she asked.
Sipho Sithole of Camagwini's record label, Native Rhythm, said he was on the musician's side.
"We believe Camagwini's side of things. From our side as the recording company, it is not good for us. It looks like a publicity stunt."
