Volvo's new ad with Jean-Claude Van Damme is rather...well...strange

2013-11-14 14:59
Los Angeles - As one of Hollywood's most famous action stars, Jean-Claude Van Damme has had to perform countless daring stunts, but in Volvo Trucks' latest film The Epic Split, he carries out one of his most spectacular yet.

The film aims to demonstrate the unique stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering.

Frankly we aren’t sure whether we are totally impressed or totally baffled by it all.

One thing is for sure…the soundtrack…no…just no.

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-11-15 15:39

Everyone to their own. I didn't give a 'thumbs down' but going by the number of people that did I would say most people liked the music. I did.

  • Thabo Cavon Seema - 2013-11-14 16:21

    This is an awesome AD

  • Craig Allen Salter - 2013-11-14 16:26

  • Michael Stephen Shackleton - 2013-11-14 16:28

It's actually a very beautiful song by Enya. I don't know why anyone would criticise the soundtrack.

      Ruan Viljoen - 2013-11-14 17:06

Oh, you know. It's just the 24 group's article writers at it again. They really feel a strong need to include their usual biased opinions in articles.

  • Steven R Randall - 2013-11-14 16:58

I nearly expected a lamp post to appear......

      Leanne Shanks - 2013-11-15 15:08

      That would've been cool!

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-11-15 15:44

That would have been Enya (sorry my Afrikaans is not too good!)

      Craig Young - 2013-11-15 17:05

  • Drummond Doig - 2013-11-14 19:02

How many of the " young tigers " out there would willing take on this old man ???

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-11-15 15:50

I'm sure the "young tigers" would rather take on his spare groupies!

  • Piston Pete Outriders - 2013-11-14 20:30

What would Chuck have done... ?

      Ricky Correia - 2013-11-15 10:17

He would have carried the trucks, one in each arm !

      Andrew Selous - 2013-11-15 15:06

..after round house kicking the drivers for showing off.

      Grant Montgomery - 2013-11-15 15:51

Split his pants for a start!

  • Glen MacLachlan - 2013-11-14 20:34

The idiot who wrote this article must reveal him/herself. Are you older than 16? Does someone actually get paid for being such a moron? Enya and Van Damme, classic...

  • John Abudiwe - 2013-11-14 20:38

Stunning advert, amazing music, wonder who wrote this article, how dare they give their personal opinion on something like this. Volvo and the people who market Volvo are dedicated professionals who know their product. Brilliant advert!

  • Dickson Sithole - 2013-11-15 08:05

Nothing wrong with the advert! I like it

  • Valentia Hobbs - 2013-11-15 08:25

It's clear that the person who wrote this article does not understand the angle of the advert... or what Volvo Dynamic steering means... It really is creativity at it's best!

  • Zainab Abrahams - 2013-11-15 08:29

    i think its AWESOME :)

  • Colin Rautenbach - 2013-11-15 09:33

Typical South African Reviewer knows nothing about advertising. The soundtrack is perfect it encourages harmony and simplicity like volvos new Dynamic steering

  • Darshana Mistri - 2013-11-15 09:50

    I love it!!!

  • Sht Stirrer - 2013-11-15 09:52

Reversing like that, in articulated trucks? No-o-o-o-o-o-o-ooooo......

      Leanne Shanks - 2013-11-15 15:10

I agree - that really is the very strangest part of the ad!!

  • Lindsay Neil Boss - 2013-11-15 09:56

    Jealousy makes you nasty...

  • Klapto Phillimon Shabalala - 2013-11-15 10:04

    hahhhhhahahhhaahah!this is too funny!

  • Justin Kinley Atkins - 2013-11-15 12:09

Personally I think it is damn effective in getting the message across. It certainly made me sit up and take notice and that ultimately is what advertising is all about!

  • Be Thenji - 2013-11-15 12:21

This is a great ad, had my eyes glued to the screen. Not the greatest actor, but action wise...seems he still got it.

  • Be Thenji - 2013-11-15 12:23

This ad had my eyes glued to the screen. Not the greatest actor but 'action-wise'...seems he still got it!

  • Sandra Bester - 2013-11-15 12:30

    Well done Volvo; impressive!

I thought he was on a boat at the start haha.

  • Spike Hodge - 2013-11-15 14:15

To drive the articulated truck on the right, backwards, with that accuracy is pretty bloody impressive!

  • Jeremy Richard Schaffner - 2013-11-15 14:16

Why don't they try that on the Maloto road....?

  • Carolyn Nosipho Mncube - 2013-11-15 14:24

    wow impressive

  • Faith Sabelo - 2013-11-15 14:41

I had a serious crush on Jean- Claude Van Damme during his Double Impact days

  • Petrus Parra - 2013-11-15 14:43

They should do it at 200km/h! THAT would be impressive. They'd have to change the soundtrack to something else though. Probably thrash metal...

  • Lydia Christenson - 2013-11-15 14:48

I love the ad - love the music - and I guess if you don't like Enya you know "jack" about voice and music ...lol

      Charles Monini - 2013-11-15 15:02

im a bit perplexed, yes the music is good and all but is the stunt relevant to what volvo is trying to get across to us. just dont get it_

      Andrew Selous - 2013-11-15 15:10

      Charly.READ the story again.

  • Louis Marais - 2013-11-15 16:01

Epic. Awesome. What a legend. Very good ad. Excellent. The analogy between the truck (the words used to describe himself/ truck) and him as an actor/ person is done really well. Not too complicated, just right. In the world of advertisement, simplicity is the key and always a recipe for success.

  • Carina Archer - 2013-11-15 16:49
