Cape Town - Before welcoming her first-born daughter, Blue Ivy, and twins Sir and Rumi Carter, the world-renowned musician suffered several miscarriages.

During an interview with Elle, the 38-year-old answered questions from fans and got candid about suffering multiple miscarriages before welcoming Blue Ivy in 2012, an experience that made her realise her purpose in life was "much deeper".

"I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed," she revealed.

When asked what her thoughts were on not winning accolades for her 2016 album Lemonade and documentary Homecoming, she responded, "Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is, in fact, a gift."

She also added, "Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else," Independent reported.

It was after the birth of Blue Ivy that her quest became deeper. "I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger."

The Formation singer continues, "It’s difficult for me to go backward... Being 'No. 1' was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling."
