Celebs and their weird food fetishes

accreditation

Cape Town - They have access to practically any restaurant in the world, yet these celebrities tend to make questionable choices when it comes to their food.

We look at a few of the most bizarre.

Angelina Jolie– Cockroaches

While on a trip to Cambodia with her kids in 2017, the actress demonstrated how to cook spiders, crickets and scorpions, writes US Weekly.

Angelina even taught the BBC reporter that accompanied them how to prepare a tarantula –carefully removing the fangs before heating it up in a pan. She says she believes eating bugs has always formed part of the human diet.

"I think there’s truth to the survival during the war – when people were being starved, they were able to survive on things like this, and they did."

It wasn’t the first time she’s indulged in insects while visiting the country, Daily Star points out.

The Maleficent actress once revealed she enjoyed eating fried cockroaches as they’re not just tasty, but full of protein too. She even offered a word of advice to anyone else brave enough to tuck into the creatures.

"One drawback is that there’s this pointy bit on the stomach you can’t eat so you have to kind of pop that off."

Thanks, Angie!

Mariah Carey– Purple-coloured foods only

After having twins Moroccan Scott and Monroe Cannon (now 8), Mariah struggled to shake off a few unwanted kilos – so she turned to the purple-coloured-foods-only diet.

For three days out of the week, the singer only tucked into foods such as purple potatoes, lilac cauliflower and magenta carrots.

According to the Daily Mail, the diet gained popularity as purple foods tend to contain anthocyanins, which is a powerful anti-oxidant.

Apart from its reported anti-aging benefits and promises to improve cardiovascular health, anthocyanins are thought to prevent cancer as it protects cells from damage.

Jessica Simpson – Nicotine gum

Not only did she reveal in 2010 that she often goes without brushing her teeth, Jessica shared another strange fact when it came to the matters of her mouth – she’s addicted to nicotine chewing gum.

Notice the irony?

The singer doesn’t smoke, nor has she ever tried it, E! News points out, but there’s another reason she sinks her choppers into the gum.

"The first time I ever chewed Nicorette gum was when one of my close friend’s mother gave it to me. I think she thought she was giving me Dentyne Ice or something,” she told Jay Leno during an episode of the Tonight Show.

"So I’m chewing it, and it’s as if there’s a party in my mouth. It’s like fireworks. And I’m talking a million miles an hour and I’m like, I love this gum, what is this gum? I have to have this gum! And it’s Nicorette and it gives me energy. It’s almost as if drinking three Red Bulls."

Renée Zellweger – Ice cubes

The actress once revealed she opted to snack on ice cubes while on a diet, writes Storypick.com.

"As long as I get that feeling of constant feeding it’s semi-tolerable," she says.

Nicolas Cage– Sexually-dignified animals

His decision to cut pork from his diet isn’t unusual – many people do, for religious reasons or for health. But Nicolas’ explanation is downright odd.

During a 2010 interview the actor revealed he doesn’t eat pork because of the way pigs have sex, according to The Guardian.

"I have a fascination with fish, birds, whales – sentient life – insects, reptiles," he said.

"I actually choose the way I eat according to the way animals have sex. I think fish are dignified with sex. So are birds. But pigs, not so much. So I don’t eat pig meat or things such as that. I eat fish and fowl."
