Cape Town - Former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen took to social media this week to celebrate a year of sobriety.

The 53-year-old actor shared the milestone with his 11 million Twitter followers on Tuesday 11 November, writing, “So, THIS happened yesterday! A fabulous moment, in my renewed journey. #TotallyFocused.”

The post included his Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety coin which reads, “To thine own self be true”, with the words recovery, unity and service, E! Online reports.

Sheen previously bashed the AA – in February 2011 he called the 12-step programme a “cult”, US Weekly reports.

In January 2016 the father of five opened up to television personality Dr Mehmet Oz about his past attempts to quit drinking, People reports.

“There was a stretch where I didn’t drink for 11 years,” he said. “No cocaine, no booze for 11 years. So I know that I have that in me.”

But, he said, he fell off the wagon after he was diagnosed HIV-positive.

“It was to suffocate the anxiety and what my life was going to become with this condition and getting so numb I didn’t think about it.

“It was the only tool I had at the time, so I believed that would quell a lot of that angst. A lot of that fear. And it only made it worse.”

The actor recently visited the Moonlight Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park in Australia.

“To the good people of Melbourne and Sydney; thank you, thank you! thank you!” he shared in an Instagram post. “Nothing but love at every turn! To be continued . . . #moonlitsancuary.”
