Cape Town - In her new flick, Gringo, she plays a businesswoman on a mission to launch a bioengineered variety of marijuana – but it turns out Charlize Theron (42) is a fan of the green stuff in real life as well!

The Oscar winner says she and her mom, Gerda, take the drug, which is legal in the US state of California where they live, to help them sleep.

"I have really bad sleep [patterns] and so does my mom. And so we were talking about it because we do take sleeping medication and I was saying to her, 'You know maybe we should figure out a way to try something that could help us sleep,'" Charlize said during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

She added that her mom arrived home one day and told her she’d bought some marijuana.

"I really thought I’d be the responsible one to have to go and get that and last week she showed up at my house, literally drove in her little tennis outfit and brought me a little container and just left it on my kitchen table."

So how are their sleeping patterns now? “It totally works, it’s amazing,” Charlize says, joking that her mom is now her “dealer”.

“You can’t have her, she’s all mine.”

The South African beauty has previously spoken out about her weed habit, saying she was once a “wake and baker”. But she quit when the drug stopped agreeing with the “chemistry” of her body.

“My chemistry was really good with it when I was younger and then it just changed one day,” she’d told E! News. “In my early thirties I just became boring on it and I would just stand in front of my fridge, so that's no good.”
