Cape Town – Demi Moore just got candid about her battles ahead of her long-anticipated memoir.

In her memoir, Inside Out, the 56-year-old actress reveals she was raped when she was 15 years old, which sparked a long battle with body image and substance abuse, The New York Times reports.

"When I was younger I was obligated to be of service," Demi said. "I wouldn’t be loved if I wasn’t – if I didn’t give of myself. My value was tied into my body."

The Ghost actress says she was still abusing alcohol and drugs when six months pregnant with her and ex-husband Ashton Kutcher’s baby, PEOPLE reports.

She lost the child she’d intended to name Chaplin Ray, and blamed herself for the miscarriage.

Afterwards, in 2005, the couple tied the knot and sought fertility treatment, hoping to fall pregnant again, Harper’s BAZAAR reveals.

They split in 2013 after the A-lister began drinking and abused the painkiller Vicodin.

Demi also talks about the pain her drug abuse caused within her family, especially to the relationships with her daughters and ex Bruce Willis.

"In retrospect, what I realised is that when I opened the door [again], it was just giving my power away."

The actress says it was really important to her to have natural childbirth because she didn’t want to miss a moment.

"And with that [childbirth] I experienced pain. So part of being sober is, I don’t want to miss a moment of life, of that texture, even if that means being in some pain."

After suffering auto-immune disease and digestive problems, the actress sought treatment for trauma, co-dependency and substance abuse.
