Cape Town – Dwyane Wade says we can all learn a thing or two from our kids, but after he went on air to praise his 12-year-old's "strength and courage" to come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, we could all learn a thing or two about parenting from him.
The former basketball player spoke to Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson on their podcast All the Smoke this week, and opened up about Zion Wade, in-between looking back on his successful career. "First of all, if you want to talk about strength and courage," he said, "My 12-year-old has way more than I have.
"You can learn something from your kids. In my household, man, that's all we talk about. We talk about making sure our kids are seen by each of us, me and my wife, we talk about making sure our kids understand the power in their voice."
Dwyane Wade is married to Being Mary Jane star, Gabrielle Union, and the two share one-year-old Kaavia James, as well as three other children from Dwyane's previous relationships, Zaire, Xavier and 12-year-old Zion.
This isn't the first time Dwyane's praised and had to defend Zion. After Gabrielle shared a picture of their family on Instagram, users started commenting on the fact that Zion was wearing a crop top and acrylic nails.
Dwyane later responded to all the negativity the post garnered and wrote on Twitter, "I've seen some post-thanksgiving hate on social about my family photo. Stupidity is a part of this world we live in – so I get it. But here's the thing – I've been chosen to lead my family not y'all. So we will continue to be us and support each other with pride, love & a smile!"

Talking to Matt and Stephen, Dwyane reiterated that their home is a supportive and space for their kids to be whoever they want to be.
"We want them to be whoever they feel like they can be in this world. That's how I go, 'Understand that you can be whoever. You can be whatever... While you're trying to go down that process, here's what's going to come at you: There is going to be a lot of negativity, there is going to be a lot of hate.'," he said.
"It's not even for my son's sexuality, it's for being a young black man. So everything that comes with that."
