Cape Town - Supermodel sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid are still coming to terms with the loss of their beloved gran.

The pair have taken to their Instagram pages to share heartfelt posts with throwback snaps, paying homage to their grandmother, Ans van den Herik, who was laid to rest following her long battle with cancer, E! News reported.

The 78-year-old who "fought cancer six times in her life," according to Gigi was "the greatest mother and grandmother," the 24-year-old said.

"I can’t think about never being able to hug her again. But I do like to think that she’s flying high with our Opa, happy, in heaven," she captioned the post.

A-list celebrities, among them Kris Jenner and Chrissy Teigen, have sent their condolences to the Hadid family.

The models' mom, Yolanda Hadid, also paid tribute to her mother on social media, Cosmopolitan reports.

"Thank you for loving me the way the way that you did and for making me the woman that I am today," Yolanda captioned her post.

"On angel wings you were taken away, but in my heart you will always stay... I can’t imagine this life without you but I pray that I will hear you whisper in the tallest trees and feel your love in the gentle breeze...

"When I miss you the most, our beautiful memories will hold you close... Our love is eternal and you will always be with me and I will always be with you beyond the bounds of this realm."

This tragic loss comes after Gigi and Bella were left traumatised when being robbed in Greece while on holiday.
