- James Corden says he recently woke up and couldn't open his eye.
- After calling up his doctor, he had to get emergency eye surgery – and he was awake for the entire procedure.
- "It's the strangest thing – I just kept going, 'Oh my God. Oh my God.'," the talk show host said of the experience.
So it turns out there was a real reason behind James Corden not actually driving in that Justin Bieber Carpool Karaoke episode.
On Wednesday The Late Late Show host revealed to Ellen DeGeneres during a remote recording of her show that he had to have emergency eye surgery years after initially injuring himself, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Bizarrely, the 41-year-old recalls a part in a play in New York that resulted in the damage. "I used to do this bit in the play where I'd hit myself in the head with a trashcan lid," he said. "One night during the play I injured my eye. Not really badly.
"I had to go and see a doctor. He gave me some things, and he said, 'Look, over some time, it will heal.' And it did."
But James added: "About a year ago it flared up again – this sort of little scratch on my eyeball. I'd been seeing doctors a lot."
The actor turned talk show host said he woke up one day and couldn't open his eye. After calling his doctor and going in, he had to have an emergency operation.
"It's the strangest thing because you're awake, but it's just numb, so you can't feel anything," he said of the procedure for which he was awake the entire time. "I just kept going, 'Oh my God. Oh my God.'"
James also addressed fans calling him out after it was revealed he wasn't behind the wheel and actually driving the car in his Carpool Karaoke segment with Justin Bieber. He said at the time there was a "safety issue".
"We were being towed by a truck, and people said that it was a disgrace that I didn't really drive. The reason I didn't drive that day was because my eye was really hurting and we were worried that it wouldn't be safe," he said.
