Cape Town - It’s been over a year since their divorce, but Johnny Depp and his ex-wife are still butting heads.

Johnny has now turned the tables on ex-wife Amber Heard, accusing her of assault.

In court papers obtained by People magazine, the 55-year-old actor claims Amber (32) “punched him in the face twice” because he arrived late to her 30th birthday party.

In the official documents, Johnny alleges that he was stuck in a business meeting, and he texted Amber to let her know he was running late.

When he arrived two hours later, the Pirates of the Caribbean star says his then wife was "cold towards" him and "criticised" him after her guests had left.

He was "not drunk or high on drugs" – as Amber had previously claimed – and "the only thing that he did was responded by grabbing her arms to stop her from punching him again and told her to stop."

The legal documents surfaced after Johnny filed a lawsuit against a UK newspaper and journalist over an article that labeled him a “wife-beater”.

The report followed Amber’s claims that Johnny had physically and verbally abused her in 2016. She filed for divorce after 15 months of marriage, and was granted a temporary domestic violence restraining order against Johnny, according to US Weekly.

She submitted a photo of herself with a black eye to the court, claiming Johnny had thrown a cell phone at her, “striking my cheek and eye with great force”.

She also claimed that on the night of her 30th birthday, Johnny arrived drunk and high, becoming violent after the guests left.

Amber’s lawyer has dubbed Johnny’s latest filings "totally false".

"On many occasions, eyewitnesses observed the extent of the abuse Mr Depp inflicted on Ms Heard,” he told People.

The couple reached a settlement and finalised their divorce in January 2017.

Amber was granted $7 million (R94 million), which she donated to charity to “hopefully help those less able to defend themselves.”
