Cape Town - Retired baseball player Kris Humphries is opening up about his infamous 72-day marriage to reality TV star Kim Kardashian (38), saying their relationship wasn’t fake.
The 34-year-old announced his retirement in an extremely personal essay for The Players' Tribune, in which he talks about his career and failed marriage to Kim, ET Online reports.
Kris and Kim's whirlwind romance began in 2010 when they officially started dating and by May 2011 the two were engaged. Later that year, on 20 August, the couple tied the knot but the marriage was short-lived as Kim filed for divorce on 31 October, TMZ reports.
"I was definitely naive about how much my life was going to change," Kris says
"But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake."
Kris, who experienced anxiety in the months following the couple’s split, says his relationship with Kim was 100% real, Us Weekly reports.
"There's definitely a lot about that world that's not entirely real. But our actual relationship was 100% real," he said.
"When it was clear that it wasn't working...What can I say? It sucked. It's never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that – with your friends, with your family...But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it's a whole other level. It was brutal."
Kris recalls the intense public scrutiny he faced after the divorce, with Kardashian fans taunting him at games.
He even admits to lying about his identity while out in public.
"My whole life I was a really confident, happy person," he shared.
"But nothing can prepare you for the feeling of walking down the street, or being anywhere, really – the grocery store, the gas station – and having people literally running up on you and trying to film you, trying to grab you, saying God knows what."
He's made it clear that he's not looking for sympathy and says he's focused on the next phase of his life. Kris has already opened up several restaurants across America.
