Leslie Jones exposes racist Twitter trolls

Cape Town – Ghostbusters actress, Leslie Jones was pushed to quit Twitter on Monday night after various accounts racially and misogynistically abused her.

The comedian exposed horrible tweets she had been sent following the release of the female reboot.

And understandably the 48-year-old was horrified, hurt and had had enough.

Writers of the film spoke out in Leslie’s defense.

And so did a lot of other people, who praised the comedian with the hashtag #LoveForLeslieJ

Lelsie also called Twitter out for letting tweets such as the ones directed at her be published.

After calling out Twitter to put a stop to the online abuse, Leslie expressed how she was feeling.

But the hatred towards her proved to be too much, Leslie’s final tweet was a message to say she would no longer be using the social media platform.

When first contacting Twitter regarding the inappropriate hate speech towards Leslie, a representative sent Buzzfeed News a link to their content boundaries.

Following Leslie's decision to quit Twitter however, a spokesperson for the social media site sent a statement to Buzzfeed news.

The statement read: "This type of abusive behavior is not permitted on Twitter, and we’ve taken action on many of the accounts reported to us by both Leslie and others. We rely on people to report this type of behavior to us but we are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to prevent this kind of abuse.

"We realize we still have a lot of work in front of us before Twitter is where it should be on how we handle these issues."
