London - A letter penned by Madonna following her infamous clash with David Letterman 24 years ago is going up for auction.

TMZ reports that the note, written in May 1994, will go under the hammer at Boston-based auction house RR Auction at the end of this month.

In the letter, the superstar rants about her interview on the Late Show with David Letterman, which became famous after she swore 14 times.

Madonna complains in the letter that “no one would have given a fuck” if it was a man who had sworn on the show.

She goes on: “In this country, you are not allowed to be a girl, look good, have a point of view and have a good time all at once. Need I say more.”

According to TMZ, the auctioneers are expecting the handwritten note to fetch $2 000 (R30 000) to $3 000, but the amount of interest in the memorabilia could mean it will go for thousands more through online bids ahead of the live auction
on 25 September.

The letter stems from Madonna’s clash with Letterman during her March 31 1994 appearance on his iconic chat show.

After Letterman introduced the superstar with the comment that “she’s slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry”, Madonna went on to say the word ‘fuck’ 14 times, drop countless innuendos and then playfully refuse to leave the set.

The episode was the most censored in US network television talk show history, but also scored Letterman some of his highest ratings.
