Cape Town - Mel B is going to rehab – but it has nothing to do with sex addiction, a close friend says.

The Spice Girls star (43) revealed she will check herself into a clinic for post-traumatic stress disorder next month. But her pal Gary Madatyan says rumours that Mel is “sex-crazed” and “sleeping with up to three men in a day”, as reported by The Sun, are utter nonsense.

“Yes, she has some issues she’s working on, but it’s emotional issues stemming from everything she’s been through with her divorce,” Gary, a hairdresser and close friend of the singer, told People.

“It’s not drugs or sex addiction at all. She is not a sex-addicted person.”

He has no doubt Mel would push through. “Yes, she has some stress, but she’s getting help and she’s a fighter – she’s Scary Spice.”

In a statement last week, Mel was candid about her struggle to cope after her bitter divorce battle with producer Stephen Belafonte.

Drinking had become a way for her to “numb her pain”, the former America’s Got Talent judge admitted.

“The past few months have been incredibly difficult for me.

“I’ve been working with a writer on my book, Brutally Honest and it has been unbelievably traumatic reliving an emotionally abusive relationship and confronting so many massive issues in my life.

“I have made the decision to go into a proper therapy programme in the next few weeks, but it has to be in the UK because I am very, very British and I know that will work best for me.”

Meanwhile, a supposed pal, restaurateur Rusty Updegraff told The Sun he hoped this was Mel’s “wake-up call”.

“Mel has got crazier over the years and I’ve had enough. I cannot deal with it any more.

“She is drinking every day that she isn’t working. Her sexual appetite is out of control. You can’t take any straight guy round to her house.

“I’ve known her have sex with three men in a day and then they are on rotation.”

In March 2007, Mel filed for divorce from Stephan after 10 years of marriage, accusing him of “emotional and physical abuse”. She later dropped the charges.

The couple now have shared custody of their six-year-old daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte, according to TMZ.

Mel is also mom to 19-year-old Phoenix, with Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar, and 11-year-old Angel, with actor Eddie Murphy.

In the wake of Mel B’s rehab revelation, her mother Andrea said she was so proud of her daughter.

“She has the courage to face her demons head on and deal with them,” she tweeted. “I know what hell she has been through and I know what trauma she has suffered and still suffers."
