Cape Town - The phrase "You can’t pour from an empty cup" may sound like a cliché, but former first lady, Michelle Obama thinks it’s very important for people to take care of themselves and their health before even thinking of devoting their time and energy to someone else.

We love hearing what Michelle has to say. Imparting her wisdom, the mother of two took to Instagram and shared discoveries she made over her many years of being a mother, wife and public figure, with a very demanding job.

"Over the years I’ve recognized something important: Whether it was going to the gym at the crack of dawn or finding an extra moment to unwind in my favourite chair, in order for me to be at my best for others around me, I needed to find some time for myself. That’s easier said than done, and it can feel impossible when our kids, jobs, and lives rely on us for so much. But it couldn’t be more important for our well-being," she said.

Michelle also mentioned how proud she is of all the women who reached out to her, telling her they’ve decided to take better care of themselves before being there for the people they love and those that need them.

Some women started new hobbies, committed themselves to morning runs, asserted themselves in difficult relationships and others even joined book clubs – all to better the quality of their lives.

Michelle further challenged her followers to find a friend that can join them in these beautiful moments.

"I saw how powerful it is to have a community that supports us in our health. So, before the end of summer, I want you to find a friend to join you in some of these personal wellness moments – post a picture and tag me so I can see it, too! Because getting some time for ourselves doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to be alone!" she wrote.

And from what we know, Michelle certainly knows how to take some time for herself and even party up a storm.
