Sam Smith reveals he had liposuction when he was 12

Cape Town – Sam Smith is trying to maintain a transparent relationship with his fans.

In a candid interview on Jameela Jamil's new series I Weigh Interviews, the Stay with Me hitmaker opens up about his struggle with body confidence revealing that he had liposuction at the age of 12.

Straight off the bat, Sam reveals why he decided to speak up about his struggle with his body image, saying: "Recently I was on tour and - my whole life I've struggled with my body and my relationship with it - and I was on tour, working out everyday and being super-healthy last year and I came off of tour and over Christmas I just started eating a lot and gaining bad habits and when I was on holiday again a few months ago, for the first time ever I just had surge in me to fight against my issues instead of being a victim to them all the time."

In February, Sam shared a shirtless photo of himself on Instagram alongside a lengthy caption announcing that he is done feeling ashamed.

"Yesterday, I decided to fight the fuck back. Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally," he wrote.

Before reaching a point of feeling confident enough to fight against his struggle, Sam reveals he was as young as 8 years old when he first started feeling self-conscious about his body.

He goes on to share that he reached a breaking point when he was 11 and went to see a doctor.

"When I hit 11 years old, I went to the doctor's… I was so self-conscious that it was affecting my mood every day and my life as a teenager."

The 26-year-old adds that he was carrying a lot of estrogen in his chest and so he had liposuction to help better his self-confidence but in hindsight it wasn't the best solution.

"I had liposuction, I was 12 years old…

"At the time I think I was very happy about it but it didn't really change anything. I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn't figured out my relationship with food, so it didn't really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal."
