Selena Gomez loses two-year reign as most followed celeb on IG

Cape Town – Selena Gomez has been dethroned as the most followed person on Instagram.

33-year-old soccer star, Cristiano Ronaldo has taken the top spot on the social media platform with 144 320 746 Instagram followers.

Selena – who announced she would be taking a break from social media last month – is now second with 144 312 745 Instagram followers, E! News reports.

The 26-year-old announced in September she would be taking a “step back” to “live my life present to the moment I have been given”.

Shortly thereafter, Selena checked into a mental health facility to help deal with her ongoing anxiety and depression.

Selena has held the title since 2016, when she took over from good friend Taylor Swift – who currently has over 112 million followers.

Other celebs with major Instagram followings include Ariana Grande with 132 million, Kim Kardashian with 120 million and Beyoncé with 119 million.
